IKEA UK inspects each piece of furniture before buying it back

The programme pairs an online estimate with a final offer made after a store inspection. IKEA UK reported buying back 55,841 items in its 2024 financial year.

September 2023 to August 2024

What the team faced

IKEA launched its UK Buyback & Resell programme in 2021 so customers could sell eligible used IKEA furniture back to the retailer for credit. Its published UK process uses an in-store check to establish the condition of each piece and decide whether it can be resold.

What the team put in place

  1. IKEA’s published UK process starts with the owner entering the product details and condition online. The service provides a preliminary estimate and a reference number for the store visit.
  2. The owner brings the assembled furniture and the reference to a participating store. Staff confirm the item’s identity, check its condition and determine the final offer, which may differ from the estimate.
  3. When IKEA accepts the item and the owner agrees to the offer, the retailer issues a card for the agreed credit. Eligible pieces enter the retailer’s second-hand range.

Reported outcome

IKEA UK reported buying back 55,841 items through the programme between September 2023 and August 2024.

The unit of measure is a piece of furniture bought back in that financial year. Calculating sell-through would require sales records for those same pieces.
